Obituary:
Paul E. Spencer Sr., 85 of Crandon passed away peacefully at his home on April 24, 2009 after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Paul was the eldest of 5 children born to Orlie and Katherine (Deaton) Spencer. He was born August 24, 1923 in Winegar, Wisconsin. The family relocated to Crandon before Paul began his schooling and Crandon has since been his place of residence.

Paul entered the CCC’s at age 17 and remained in the program until being inducted into the Army. He was deployed to Rhineland, Central Europe where he served until the war ended. He ended his service as a Buck Sergeant and talked very little of his time served. He did say that the most beautiful person in the world was the Statue of Liberty when he sailed into the Harbor and saw the lights and knew he was home.

Upon his return to civilian life he married Rhoda Spencer on July 27, 1946. To them was born one child, Paul E. Spencer Jr. who resides in Monico.

The major portion of his working life was as an auto mechanic for the Crandon Motor Company owned by Lester, Glenn and Bob Carter. He enjoyed this work and always, had a car in his garage at home to repair. A monument to his skill is a 1929 Model A that he brought back to working condition and drove in the 4th of July parade every year.

Paul was a member of the local VFW, volunteered on the rescue squad back when the unit was being organized, served several years on the Crandon City Counsel and the County Governing Body. He was proud of Crandon and Forest County and the people that chose to live here. Paul had a sense of humor and a hearty laugh that were his trademark.

His greatest joy came from deer hunting with his son, brothers and nephews. He was on the pit crew of his sons and friends snowmobile race teams; He also followed the horse shows in which his son participated. In his later years he became a member of the Seventh-day Adventist church and served as a Deacon.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Earl and Donald, his daughter-in-law, Carol, grandson, Paul III and granddaughter, Colleen. Leaving to mourn are his wife of 62 years, son Paul Jr. sisters Wanda Krabbe (Crandon) and Pat Bonack (Hiles) nieces, nephews and other friends and family members.

Somewhat as did the Bibical Paul, he fought a good fight, ran a good race, finished the course and now sleeps to await the reward God has prepared for him.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 29 from 9:30-11:00 a.m. at the Weber-Hill Funeral Home. Funeral Services will follow at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor C.
